Interview with Carl Liungman

1. Can you share with us your journey into composing? What drew you to the world of music and led you to pursue it as a career?

Carl: My musical journey began in childhood, immersed in the sounds of jazz, rock, pop, classical, and experimental electronic music. My training as a classical pianist, inspired by Peter Jablonski, and as a jazz pianist, influenced by Keith Jarrett and Esbjörn Svensson, shaped my approach. Pop icons like Elton John and John Legend also left a mark. Combining classical techniques with jazz’s chordal fluidity enabled me to explore a unique path. For me, every genre holds inspiration; every style is a universe waiting to be understood. My desire to tell stories through instrumental music culminated in my debut album Born, which captures universal life experiences.

2. Your previous albums, Born and Shine, were praised for their depth and innovation. What new directions or themes did you explore in Change that set it apart from your earlier works?

Carl: In Change, I delved deeper into classical piano, focusing on intricate “finger-wise” patterns and minimalistic elements. This album is more personal than ever—every composition reflects my growth and introspection. I took time to refine my harmonic language, resulting in music that feels both determined and intimate.

3. The title of your third album, Change, suggests a personal or artistic transformation. What inspired the name, and how does the album reflect this theme?

Carl: The name came naturally as I sensed a shift in the universe and in my life. This year brought profound changes—my mother passed away, my father faced illness, and I moved to a new home. These experiences deeply influenced the album, shaping its emotional core and musical direction.

4. You have a unique way of blending classical and contemporary elements in your compositions. How did this style evolve, and how is it showcased in Change?

Carl: My style evolved from a deep appreciation of multiple genres and techniques. In Change, this blend is evident in tracks like Hope, which features classical elements, and Survivor, which leans into contemporary pop influences.

5. Which track from Change holds the most personal significance for you, and what is the story behind its creation?

Carl: Both Mother and Change are deeply meaningful. Mother began as an experiment with ascending scales, symbolizing a journey to the heavens—ironically composed before my mother’s passing. Change emerged from a desire to improve my technique and evolved into a piece driven by compelling chord progressions and minimalistic patterns.

6. Your music often conveys deep emotion and vivid imagery. How do you translate your thoughts and experiences into sound?

Carl: I follow my heart, allowing music to flow naturally. While I embrace traditional patterns, I make them my own, combining spontaneity with deliberate craftsmanship.

7. Do you usually start with a specific idea, or let the music take its own shape as you compose?

Carl: It’s often a mix. Sometimes, I start with an idea; other times, I let the music guide me. The process feels like a dialogue between me and the piano.

8. How do you approach composing for solo albums versus other projects?

Carl: Solo albums are deeply personal—a conversation with myself through the piano. It becomes my voice, my friend, and my mirror. This mindset allows me to craft music that is introspective and honest.

9. The Swedish landscape and culture often inspire artists. Has your home country played a role in shaping the music of Change?

Carl: Absolutely. Sweden’s dramatic seasons and traditional choir music have profoundly influenced my style. The contrasts in nature and weather mirror the contrasts in my music, creating a dynamic emotional landscape.

10. What’s next for you? Are there any live performances, new collaborations, or future projects in the works that fans should look forward to?

Carl: I’m already working on my fourth solo piano album, which will continue the narrative of my previous works. This may be the concluding chapter of a larger story. I’m also planning more live performances and hope to play internationally. Exciting collaborations are in the pipeline, though they remain a secret for now.
