Exclusive Interview with Irish Traditional Band FOURWINDS on Their New Album “Allta”

FOURWINDS, the electrifying Irish traditional band, is proud to announce the release of their highly anticipated second album, Allta. Following the success of their debut, this album is a testament to the band’s evolving sound, untamed energy, and deep connection to the Irish music tradition. With 11 stunning tracks, including both new compositions and cherished traditional pieces, Allta captures the raw, unbridled energy that its title—meaning “wild” in Irish—perfectly encapsulates.

We sat down with Robbie ( FOURWINDS’s member ) to discuss the band’s origins, the creative process behind Allta, and their vision for the future:

1. Can you tell us the story behind the formation of FOURWINDS? How did you all come together, and what inspired the band’s name?

Robbie: It started off with an idea to create a powerful traditional band. While paying homage to the purity of the tradition, we wanted to put our own stamp on the music with our combined styles. The elements are strong and powerful as a collection of our individual styles, but also lean into the more gentle aspects of the music, which is evident in our records.

2. Your sound combines traditional Irish folk with indie and alt-folk elements. How would you describe the unique musical style of FOURWINDS, and what influences helped shape it?

Robbie: FOURWINDS’ style is both masculine and feminine in the energy of its music—a true Yin-Yang scenario by design. Bands such as PLANXTY and THE BOTHY BAND are some of our main influences, as music we all grew up listening to at home.

3. What was the inspiration behind Allta? Are there any central themes or messages in this album that you’d like listeners to connect with?

Robbie: We didn’t have a specific goal in mind, but we wanted to reignite the band with a strong, impactful album. The purity of Irish Traditional Music is deeply important to us, and we hope our fans can feel that in every note.

4. How did the creative and recording process for Allta differ from your previous works? Were there any memorable moments or challenges you faced while bringing this album to life?

Robbie: Allta was recorded over the course of a year across four studios in the US and Ireland. It was a long process, especially after the eight years since our first album, but the effort was worth it. Recording it across multiple locations added a special dimension to the album’s sound and feel.

5. Ireland has such a rich musical heritage. How has Irish culture influenced your music, and what aspects of that tradition do you aim to carry forward or reinvent through your sound?

Robbie: We regard the purity of tradition with the highest value. Playing the tunes as they were written while adding our stamp to the arrangements is a delicate balance we love to explore. It’s like stepping into the mindset of someone from hundreds of years ago and recreating their vision while adding our touch.

6. Can you share any backstory or personal anecdotes behind one or two of your favorite tracks on Allta?

Robbie: One standout track for us is “Falcon’s Rest,” composed by Robbie and Tom. It was inspired by a beautiful house in Tasmania built by a host we stayed with during a tour. Her home and the surrounding views were so spectacular that we had to write a tune to honor the experience.

7. As an indie band, what have been some of the biggest lessons and milestones in your journey so far?

Robbie: Winning the Danny Kyle competition at Celtic Connections in Glasgow was a turning point. It made us realize we could take this seriously. Since then, we’ve toured the world, shared stages with heroes like Andy Irvine, and become family—literally! Tom and Caroline married in 2021, cementing our bond.

8. What role do live performances play in FOURWINDS’ identity as a band?

Robbie: Live performance is everything. It’s where people truly experience Irish culture. One memorable gig was at the Woodford Folk Festival in Brisbane, sharing the stage with Andy Irvine and Wallis Bird. The energy was electric, and it was a reminder of how far we’ve come.

9. Looking forward, what’s on the horizon for FOURWINDS?

Robbie: We’re focusing on launching Allta with a tour across Ireland and then expanding to Europe and the US. Keep an eye on our website for updates!

10. For fans new to your music, how would you suggest they approach Allta or your earlier releases?

Robbie: Start with our first album and then dive into Allta. You’ll notice the evolution in production and arrangements. Enjoy, and let us know your thoughts on social media!
