At Apricot Magazine, we’re all about exploring the music and the stories that inspire it. Today, we’re sitting down with Latin Indie Rock artist 12ayo, whose latest single, Fantasma, dives deep into memory, nostalgia, and the shadows of the past. With a unique blend of Latin rhythms and indie rock, 12ayo’s music is a testament to his evolving sound and artistic vision. Let’s hear from him on the creative journey behind Fantasma and what’s next.
1. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest release, Fantasma, and what message you hope listeners take from it?
12ayo: Fantasma is a song about those people or moments that leave a permanent mark on us, even long after they’re gone. I was inspired by how certain memories stay with us like ghosts—haunting, but in a beautiful way. My hope is that listeners feel both the nostalgia and the warmth of those memories and can relate it to their own lives.
2. How has your sound evolved over the years, and what key moments or influences have shaped your musical journey?
12ayo: My sound has changed a lot since I started. Initially, I was more focused on pure rock, but over time, I began to mix in Latin elements and some electronic touches. Working with musicians from different backgrounds has been crucial to this evolution, especially blending Latin rhythms with an indie rock vibe. It’s been a journey to find what feels like me, and I think I’m closer now than ever.
3. What was the creative process like for Fantasma? Did you face any challenges, and how did you overcome them?
12ayo: Fantasma was definitely a challenging song to create. I wanted it to have an atmospheric feel, but also be grounded in a strong rhythm. Finding the right balance was tricky, especially because I wanted the production to feel both intimate and haunting. I experimented a lot with layering sounds until it felt right, and I think the effort really paid off.
4. If you had to pick a single track from your work that represents who you are as an artist right now, which would it be, and why?
12ayo: Right now, it would definitely be Fantasma. It has all the elements I want to convey as an artist—melancholy, warmth, and a mix of different cultural sounds. This track shows the direction I’m heading in and the fusion of styles that feels most authentic to me.
5. Who are some artists, past or present, who have had the biggest impact on your music?
12ayo: I’d say artists like Gustavo Cerati and Caifanes have had a huge impact on me. They blend rock with Latin sounds in such an effortless way, and that’s always inspired me. I also draw a lot from contemporary indie artists, like Tame Impala, who experiment with production and soundscapes. Mixing all these influences feels natural and gives my music a unique edge.
6. What’s one aspect of music-making or performing that fans might be surprised to learn about you?
12ayo: I’m actually quite a perfectionist in the studio! I think some people expect indie rock to be a little rough around the edges, but I love working on the fine details. I’ll spend hours making sure every layer of sound feels just right, even if it means taking much longer to finish a track.
7. How do you stay inspired to create, and do you have any personal routines or rituals that help you stay in the zone?
12ayo: I find inspiration from my surroundings, especially when I’m traveling or even just walking around the city. I try to take mental notes of feelings and moments that resonate. When I’m in the studio, I’ll often start with a particular emotion or image in mind and build the song from there. It helps me stay grounded and connected to the music.
8. What’s been your most memorable moment with fans, either live or online, and how has that impacted you?
12ayo: I’ll never forget a recent show where the crowd started singing along to one of my songs—it was surreal! Knowing that my music has reached people and connected with them on that level is incredible. Moments like that remind me why I do this and keep me motivated to create.
9. Are there any upcoming projects, collaborations, or plans that you’re particularly excited about sharing with your audience?
12ayo: Absolutely! I’ve been working on a few new singles that expand on the themes of Fantasma but explore different sounds. I’m also hoping to collaborate with other Latin indie artists soon. There’s a lot in the works, and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.
10. What advice would you give to emerging artists trying to make their mark in the music industry today?
12ayo: Stay true to your vision and don’t be afraid to mix genres or try something new. It can be easy to follow trends, but it’s the artists who carve their own path that stand out in the long run. Be patient with your growth and remember to enjoy the journey—that’s what will keep you inspired.
