From the surf-soaked shores of Bells Beach to national airwaves and indie playlists across the globe, The Burbs have made one thing crystal clear: they’re not here to play it safe. Known for blending grunge grit with pop sensibility and throwing emotional curveballs at every turn, the Australian rock trio is back with a gripping new single, There’s No Time For Presents, released May 16, 2025.
Cutting deeper than ever before, the track strips things down to a haunting acoustic vibe, layered with sharp, unsettling percussive textures—including the eerie sound of a pocketknife slicing through paper. Recorded at Sing Sing Studios with producer Aaron Dobos, it’s a raw, confessional moment that stays with you long after the final chorus fades.
Following the success of their 2024 debut demo album Sunlight Spills Across The Swimming Pool and singles Ladder To The Moon and Skin and Bones, The Burbs continue to defy genre expectations while building a dedicated following. With more music and a 2026 tour on the horizon, they’re proving their rise is no fluke.
We sat down with Danny Valitutti, Peri Brown, and Brook Mckeon to talk about the band’s beginnings, the weight behind There’s No Time For Presents, and what lies ahead.
Interview with The Burbs
The Burbs: It was inspired by a series of phone calls with a friend and what they were going through. The reason for releasing it now is kinda nerdy, we have our next three albums planned out and this track seemed right for the first one.
The Burbs: We get really bored, and then we drink a lot of Sonic Energy, and then we just play.
The Burbs: Nothing changed from the live version. We just went into the studio and kicked ass and then added harmonies and an extra guitar and a tambo and audio recordings we’d made at home of rain hitting the veranda and a squeaky door and a pocketknife slicing through paper. The rain and the door are soft and you can barely hear them but they add some texture to the track.
The Burbs: It’s still the same. Hopefully it never changes. There’s some clunky lyrics on Sunlight because those songs were just at the demo stage.
The Burbs: Fiction woven in – that’s a good description. Usually some fiction woven in. Always derived from personal experience too. The song ‘Steal Your Youth’ was about a gig we played, but when writing the song we shifted the storytelling from a punk rock gig to imagining it was a ballerina doing a performance.
The Burbs: I’m not sure. I think it gave us a touch of confidence that people are going to like a song no matter what, even if we screwed up a bit in the studio. At one point we did about twenty shows in a row with a song that only had lyrics written for the choruses and throughout three verses and pre-choruses and a bridge I was ad-libbing different off-the-cuff lyrics each time. People still seemed to enjoy it just as much as any other song. It makes you wonder huh.
The Burbs: Thank you. I think it’s in our nature. And I guess it’s about more than just the music. Genre-defiant is so true, but weird, cos we just think we’re rock, and people keep trying to define us as this or that, and there’s also this yuck feeling towards rock in Australia cos there’s so many bands who think it’s still the 1980s, it’s really embarrassing. So with genre, we have no idea what’s going on, but more than happy to be labelled as genre-defiant. With unpredictable – yeah, that sounds like a sick label, let’s add to this by failing to answer the rest of the question.
The Burbs: Recently getting picked up by a number of commercial radio stations here in Australia.
The Burbs: Two more singles this year and then five singles and an album next year. January coastal tour dates announced soon and later a tour to coincide with the album.
The Burbs: Our latest tracks have probably felt like depression, but there’s a bunch of flavours to our other songs and they’ll reveal themselves in time. We also haven’t released any of our best songs yet. Not sure if we’re meant to say that, but hey we’re fucking unpredictable okay.
