Musician Matthew Sweet is seeking financial support for medical care after suffering a severe stroke on October 12 while on tour in Toronto with Hanson. His manager, Catherine Lyons, shared on a GoFundMe page that Sweet’s treatment is projected to cost $250,000, and with the right care, he is expected to make a full recovery. As of October 23, $167,000 has been raised.
Lyons explained that Sweet “was unexpectedly and tragically forced off the road, now facing a long and uncertain journey toward recovery.” She added, “We are reaching out to his family, friends, and fans for help during this challenging time. Without insurance or income from touring, Matthew is facing a massive financial burden. While Toronto doctors were crucial in saving his life, healthcare is not free for U.S. citizens in Canada. Matthew needs to be flown to the U.S. via a medical transport plane, accompanied by medical staff, to a specialized rehabilitation center. He will receive six weeks of intensive therapy, followed by months of treatment and rehabilitation to hopefully achieve a full recovery. The costs for this extensive care are overwhelming.”
Sweet, a key figure in the 1980s Athens, Georgia, music scene, gained fame with his power-pop albums Girlfriend and Altered Beast. His most recent album, Catspaw, was released in 2021.
