The Cure have unveiled their new single “Alone” and announced that their first album in 16 years, Songs of a Lost World, will be released on November 1. The album, produced by Robert Smith and Paul Corkett at Rockfield Studios in Wales, will have its tracklist revealed on their new website and social media in the coming weeks. Listen to “Alone” below and check out the album cover.
Robert Smith describes “Alone” as the key to the album, explaining in a press release that it was the song that defined the record’s direction. He had been searching for the perfect opening line for a long time, with the theme of solitude lingering in his mind. After recording “Alone,” he recalled the poem “Dregs” by Ernest Dowson and knew both the song and the album had come to life.
The follow-up to 2008’s 4:13 Dream has faced its share of delays. Smith first mentioned in 2019 that the band had recorded 19 tracks, potentially spanning two albums. Although the original release schedule slipped, Smith was adamant about avoiding further delays. By early 2020, the album was postponed, and it wasn’t until 2022 that the band started teasing the title Songs of a Lost World and introducing new material in live performances. Two of these songs, “And Nothing Is Forever” and “I Can Never Say Goodbye,” will be released as live singles this November.
