Change

Swedish composer and pianist Carl Liungman returns with his third solo piano album, “Change,” a deeply emotive work that captures the fragility and strength inherent in life’s transitions. Released under Caliu Piano, this neoclassical gem is now available on major streaming platforms, showcasing Liungman’s masterful ability to weave classical elegance with modern emotional resonance.

Change comprises nine original compositions, each telling a story of personal and universal change. Inspired by influences such as Arvo Pärt, Nils Frahm, Hans Zimmer, Riopy, and Keith Jarrett, Liungman creates a rich tapestry of sound that blends the intimacy of classical piano with the contemplative mood of New Age music.

Recorded live at the Malmö Art Museum in May 2024, the album features the luminous tones of a Steinway grand piano, a departure from the Fazioli grand that graced his debut album, Born (2020). While Born exuded energy and vibrancy, Change is more reflective, capturing the vulnerability of loss and the beauty of renewal. The production, helmed by Carl Granberg, allows every nuance of the live performance to shine through, creating an immersive listening experience.

The album opens with “Mother,” a tender homage that sets the tone for the introspective journey ahead. Tracks like “After” and “Final Days” delve into themes of grief and farewell, while “Hope” offers a glimpse of light amidst the shadows. “Wind In June” carries a wistful air, its melody evoking a gentle breeze of memories.

Father,” a companion piece to the opening track, resonates with a quiet strength, reflecting the bonds and lessons of family. The contemplative “Survivor” explores resilience and endurance, leading into the tranquil beauty of “Peaceful.” The album concludes with the title track, “Change,” a poignant piece that encapsulates the themes of transformation, closure, and new beginnings.

Liungman’s music is rooted in personal experience, with Change reflecting his journey of grappling with the fading health of his aging parents and the broader upheavals in the world. Yet, despite its melancholy undertones, the album radiates a quiet optimism, offering solace and hope to listeners.

Beyond solo piano, Liungman’s career spans chamber music, jazz, pop, and compositions for theater and art installations, demonstrating his versatility and creative depth. His ability to translate complex emotions into music is on full display in Change, making it a must-listen for fans of neoclassical and emotive piano music.

Carl Liungman’s Change is more than an album—it’s a reflective journey that invites listeners to confront their own experiences of loss and renewal, finding peace and beauty along the way. Now streaming on all platforms, it’s a moving addition to the world of contemporary classical music.
