Funk, Latin, and Afrobeat artist Adrie has released Bring Back the Light, the first single from her forthcoming conceptual album, on September 27, 2024. Known for her dynamic artistry and eclectic sound, Adrie teams up with Chilean bassist Rulo, a trailblazer in 90s Chilean funk and hip-hop, to create a track that is both musically rich and thematically profound.
Drawing inspiration from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, Bring Back the Light delves into the interplay between darkness and light, examining how society perceives and navigates these dualities. Adrie and Rulo began their collaboration in Mexico City, experimenting with a sound rooted in Afrobeat rhythms and punctuated by funk guitars. This creative process extended to Galicia, where producer Pablo Lesuit brought in Argentinian and Spanish musicians, layering the track with a sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic depth.
The result is a multicultural fusion that transcends genres, lighting up dance floors while remaining introspective and thought-provoking. Bring Back the Light is a powerful introduction to Adrie’s conceptual album, promising a journey that bridges cinematic storytelling with infectious grooves.
The accompanying music video, shot in Madrid, showcases the talents of a women-led team. Directed and edited by Maia De Zan Hatch, with cinematography by Carolina Maltese and production by Guava House founder Daniela Baquerizo, the video is a visual counterpart to the track’s themes, adding another layer of artistry to the project.
Adrie shares her excitement about the single: “I love creating projects that combine my cinematic references with my way of understanding music, and being able to do that with this song was a very gratifying experience. This is the first preview of my conceptual album and the first piece of a puzzle that I will be unveiling in the coming months, and I’m very excited.”
Bring Back the Light sets the tone for what promises to be an ambitious and innovative album. Adrie’s unique approach to blending global sounds with profound storytelling positions her as a standout voice in modern music.
