Detroit-based alt-pop and alt-folk duo Powers of the Monk (POM) is turning heads once again with their latest release, “Icarus.” Known for their ability to traverse genres, the band’s October 25th single exemplifies their evolution from electronic rock pioneers to an indie pop-folk powerhouse.
Founded in 2006 by David S. Monk and CasSondra Powers, POM’s early work was rooted in an electronic rock sound, as showcased in their debut album Killing Time. With their 2008 project Riding With Strangers left unreleased and a decade-long hiatus starting in 2010, the band seemed to have faded into the Detroit underground. However, their triumphant return in 2020 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter.
Since their reemergence, POM has embraced a more nuanced indie pop and folk vibe, releasing gems like the 2022 EP Freight Train and a reimagined version of their demo Firefly in collaboration with producer Dani Macchi of Belladonna fame. Macchi’s influence has added a cinematic texture to the band’s sound, helping tracks like Switchin’ Rails (February 2024) and Puffy Head (with bird legs) (May 2024) connect with audiences on a deeper level.
A Flight Towards “Icarus”
“Icarus” is a poetic exploration of ambition and the fragile boundary between soaring high and falling short. With David’s atmospheric guitar and keyboard work paired with CasSondra’s haunting violin and ethereal vocals, the song creates a soundscape that feels both intimate and expansive. The duo’s ability to blend rich storytelling with emotional resonance is on full display, making “Icarus” a standout addition to their discography.
Revisiting the Past
POM has also been busy revisiting their roots. In 2024, the band remastered Killing Time and Riding With Strangers, giving fans a chance to appreciate their early experiments in electronic rock. This contrast between past and present highlights the duo’s artistic growth and their knack for reinventing themselves while staying true to their Detroit DIY ethos.
The Power of Collaboration
Producer Dani Macchi continues to be an integral part of POM’s journey, contributing a polished yet authentic edge to their releases. His influence can be felt in the dynamic arrangements and layered production that define POM’s recent output.
With “Icarus,” Powers of the Monk proves that their musical wings are stronger than ever. Fans of alt-pop, indie folk, and storytelling-driven music will find much to admire in this latest offering from one of Detroit’s most versatile acts.
