Ren Genevieve Unveils tongue tied – A Soulful Journey of Growth and Change

Ren Genevieve is back with her highly anticipated debut EP, tongue tied, a collection of five emotionally charged songs that navigate the complexities of growing up, finding confidence, and embracing change. Released on March 6, 2025, this EP is a deeply personal and beautifully crafted reflection of her journey into adulthood. With its raw vulnerability and relatable themes, tongue tied cements Genevieve as a rising star in the pop landscape, delivering poignant storytelling through her signature blend of heartfelt lyricism and dynamic vocals.

Apricot Magazine previously had the privilege of hosting an exclusive interview with Genevieve about gods to ground [ You can write it here ], a standout track from this EP. Now, tongue tied arrives as a full-fledged artistic statement, proving that Genevieve’s voice is one that deserves to be heard.

From the opening track to the final notes, tongue tied immerses listeners in a world of emotion and introspection. Each song is a “snapshot of emotion,” as Genevieve describes it, chronicling a pivotal time in her life marked by transition, uncertainty, and self-discovery. As she puts it, tongue tied captures the moments of “starting university, becoming an adult, and finding [her] own strength and power.”

The EP unfolds like a coming-of-age film, exploring the growing pains of friendships, love, and personal evolution. Tracks like “tongue tied” and “space” touch on the anxieties of speaking up, of confronting emotions that feel too big to say aloud. “michigan” and “forts” reflect on nostalgia and the bittersweet nature of growing up—yearning for the past while knowing you have to move forward. And then there’s “gods to ground,” a track we previously explored in our interview with Genevieve, which serves as a cathartic declaration of finding one’s place in an unpredictable world.

Lyrically, tongue tied is brimming with moments of striking honesty. “Take me back to when I couldn’t even stand your tone… but now I think I could use the change,” she sings in forts, a song about longing for the security of childhood while learning to embrace transformation. Meanwhile, on the title track, tongue tied, she delivers the powerful line, “Won’t stand by my side when I need you, so I’m leaving for the last time,” a moment of realization and empowerment that speaks to anyone who has ever outgrown a relationship or friendship.

One of the most compelling aspects of tongue tied is its sonic landscape. Genevieve masterfully blends intimate, acoustic-driven moments with rich, layered production that swells with emotion. Drawing inspiration from pop icons like Ariana Grande, Olivia Rodrigo, and her longtime idol Miley Cyrus, she fuses nostalgic melodies with fresh, contemporary production, creating a sound that is both timeless and undeniably modern.

Genevieve’s journey to this release is as compelling as the music itself. Having lived in Boston, New York, and Bermuda, her unique upbringing informs her songwriting, adding depth and nuance to her storytelling. Though music has always been a part of her life, it wasn’t until college that she found the courage to share her art. What began with her debut single “I Like You (I Think)” in 2022 has since blossomed into a fully realized project—one that showcases an artist unafraid to be vulnerable, unafraid to grow, and unafraid to speak her truth.

tongue tied is a deeply personal yet universally relatable EP. It’s about love, loss, hope, and the journey of stepping into one’s own. Genevieve asks the big questions—What if your friends don’t stand up for you? What if you tell someone you love them for the first time? What if you let them go, but they’re still there? But perhaps most importantly, she asks, What if you dance in your confidence?

This EP is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a testament to the beauty of growth, the messiness of change, and the power of embracing every moment. With tongue tied, Ren Genevieve delivers a stunning debut that establishes her as a force to be reckoned with in the music world.
