Ottawa-based indie pop duo Wotts is wrapping up their year with a bang (or a twang). Their new single sinking is here, and it’s a bold departure that still holds tight to the duo’s signature vibe. Known for blending nostalgic sounds with fresh indie pop energy, Wotts has taken some unexpected turns with this release, layering in hints of the country alongside influences from The Killers’ Sam’s Town and MGMT’s experimental side. The result? A genre-blurring track that tips its hat to the West while staying true to the duo’s adventurous style.
Coming off the success of their EP Good People, Bad People, sinking pushes in the opposite direction of their minimalist previous single Boy + Girl. This one is packed to the brim with textured guitar layers, orchestral violins, and thunderous drums. It’s an unapologetic display of Wotts’ “maximalist tendencies.” According to producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Jayem, the song evolved organically: “We start with an acoustic strum, and suddenly we’re throwing in everything but the kitchen sink. Honestly, it’d be easier with a plan, but we like finding the way as we go.”
As for the unexpected country twist? Bassist and guitarist Ricky 100 explains it’s all part of their “no rules” approach. “Throwing in some country vibes was just us trying something new. Even with that, I think we stayed true to who we are,” he says.
Looking ahead to 2025, Wotts promises even bolder sounds. “We’ll stay in the pop world, but don’t be shocked if we try something totally off the wall,” says Jayem. Ricky teases fans with three cryptic words: “Britpop, guitars, randomness.”
